An act of terrorism and any other disaster have one thing in common: you need to have up to date information. Staying informed means staying safe. Follow official sources of information. Sign up for ReadyHarris Alerts at readyharris.org. Follow the National Weather Service announcements.

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, you should plan for the following:

• acquire a weather radio with text display and a flashing alert
• stock up on extra hearing-aid batteries and protect them with a plastic bag
• carry a pen and paper to help communicate with someone who does not know sign language
• have access to TTY and/or VRS.

When making your emergency kit, make sure you prepare for a way to keep your cell phone charged so that you can receive important updates. Portable chargers and back-up batteries are a good option. If a storm is approaching, keep your devices fully charged in case the power goes out.
