Understanding the National Terrorism Advisory System

The National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) shares information about terrorist threats. It provides timely, detailed information to the American public. All Americans share responsibility for the nation's security. Citizens should always be aware of when there is an increased risk of a terrorist attack in the United States and how to take action.

The National Terrorism Advisory System will create two types of advisories: bulletins and alerts.

Bulletins provide general information about current terrorism threats. This information reaches homeland security partners and the public quickly. This allows people to take necessary protective measures.

The Department of Homeland Security shares National Terrorism Advisory System Alerts. These Alerts include specific and important information about the threat. These alerts may also include protective actions for individuals and communities.

The Alert has two forms:

1. Elevated – There is credible threat information about the timing and target. It is reasonable to recommend protective measures.

2. Imminent - The threat is credible, specific, and expected to occur soon.
