Harris County Texas Homeland Security and Emergency Management
Flood Insurance
While Hurricane Season is from June 1st through November 30th, Flood Season is year round. Floods are the nation’s most common and costly natural disaster, causing millions of dollars in damage every year. On average, a major flood occurs somewhere in Harris County every two years. In the last twenty years alone, Harris County has been through several devastating major floods.
If you do not live in a designated flood zone, it is still possible that you could have a flood. Flood insurance provides a significantly higher rate of compensation in the event of a flood and is therefore better than relying on FEMA assistance alone.
You can register for flood insurance through your insurance provider, but if your insurance provider does not offer flood insurance, you can call TTY at 800-462-7585 to request an agent referral. Be advised that flood insurance typically takes 30 days to begin, so get flood insurance as soon as possible. For more information, you can visit readyharris.org.>/p>
The best time to prepare is now. Flooding can happen at any time. If you would like flood alert notifications, don’t hesitate to sign up at www.FWSalerts.org.
