Chemical Threat

A hazardous chemical release can be intentional or unintentional but exposure to these chemicals can cause serious illness or even death. There are actions you can take to make sure you and your loved ones are better prepared to act quickly and effectively.

If you suspect an area is targeted for a chemical release or attack, call 9-1-1 immediately. It is always better to take precautions and notify emergency responders if you see suspicious activity.

Knowing the signs of a chemical release is important. Typical signs and symptoms from people who have been impacted by a chemical release will often include:

  • Watery eyes
  • Twitching and choking
  • Trouble breathing or losing coordination
  • Sick or dead animals near the area
  • If you are in an area impacted by a chemical release or attack seek clean air as quickly as possible unless instructed otherwise by an emergency official.

If you are instructed by an emergency official to remain in your home, building, or outdoor area, please follow the instructions. They will instruct you regarding best practices including clothing removal and disposal, how to safely receive medical attention, and the next steps to ensure you and others are safe.
